The Chattahoochee Hills City Council unanimously adopted item 25-007 on Feb. 4 to opt into House Bill 581, a change that affects how the homestead exemption is applied between property transactions.
Mayor Lindsey explained the measure “fixes the value of your property, as a floating homestead exemption, basically between transactions,” and council members noted the law's rollout by the tax office has been confusing for some residents. City staff said the change requires coordination with Fulton County and that residents who wish to claim a homestead exemption this year must still file with the county by March 31; the exemption will take effect April 1.
Councilmember discussion emphasized outreach: the city manager has been the county point of contact and will post explanatory material on the city website and in the weekly newsletter. The motion to opt in passed on a unanimous voice vote.
