Board hears drop in athletics registrations, agrees to keep offerings and seek WIAA guidance

A community member told the board there is concern a sport could be cut soon after passage of a levy. Superintendent Ingrid Colvard presented registration figures for WRMS and SHS from 2023–24 through 2025–26 showing declines in some sports programs.
Board member Jeff Wickersham said he opposed cutting sports programs, noting that registrations fell by about a quarter while overall student enrollment did not decline at the same rate. Judi King suggested establishing minimum registration numbers that a sport must meet to be offered. The board asked Lisa Birney to consult the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) for guidance on minimum registration thresholds and agreed to leave athletics offerings unchanged for the 2026–27 school year while monitoring next year’s sign-ups. The district is conducting interviews Monday for three finalists for Athletic Director/Dean of Students after screening seven applicants.
