ESD 112 leaders brief board on roles, communication and governance standards

Tim Merlino, Superintendent and CEO of ESD 112, and Marnie Allen, Assistant Superintendent and director of human resources, legal services and insurance programs, led an orientation for the Stevenson-Carson board on Feb. 26. They distributed a Board of Directors training packet that included the WSSDA Guide for Effective School Board Members and a document delineating the role of the superintendent versus the role of the school board.
Merlino emphasized that the board decides what is done (goals, direction and policies) while the superintendent decides how those goals are carried out. Allen reviewed the five standards for school boards and asked the board how it deals with conflict; members offered strategies including listening and respect. Board member Mitch Engel said, "when people are passionate it is because they care," reflecting the board's focus on community engagement as a strategic goal.
