Fire Chief Justin Matsushita presented a PowerPoint outlining the proposed study and answered council questions with assistance from City Manager Marlene Best and City Attorney Shawn Hagerty. The study will evaluate siting, temporary facility needs and the feasibility of a permanent station at the park; the staff presentation did not specify a dollar amount for the appropriation or a study timeline.
Public commenters and stakeholders raised concerns about staffing and park impacts. Earlier in the meeting Adam Smosna of the Santee Firefighters Association spoke during non‑agenda comment about infrastructure and staffing challenges facing the department. Later, Dean Velasco told the council about past park improvements and urged careful consideration of potential impacts to Woodglen Vista Park if a station is sited there. The council's action funds the next planning step; staff will return with study results and recommended next steps at a future meeting.
