Expulsion suspended for student allowed to remain at Cajon Park School under Rehabilitation Plan

At its special meeting Aug. 7, the Santee School District Board voted 4-0 to expel student #10-2324 but immediately suspended that expulsion and adopted a Rehabilitation Plan. The board entered closed session at 4:15 p.m. to hear oral and documentary evidence before deliberating and returning to public session at 5:25 p.m.
Member Dianne El-Hajj moved to expel the student for violations of Education Code § 48900 (k) (disruption/defiance), (m) (possession of an imitation firearm), and (.4) (intimidation against students or staff, Grades 4–8), under Board Policy 5144.1. The motion passed with Dustin Burns, Dianne El-Hajj, Barbara Ryan and Elana Levens-Craig recorded as voting Aye.
The Rehabilitation Plan requires the student to remain at Cajon Park School, achieve a 2.0 GPA or better, have no new suspensions, attend regularly, complete 15 hours of community service by Nov. 8, 2024, and complete counseling programs for decision-making and peer pressure. The student must present documentation of completion by Nov. 8, 2024. A parent must meet with the Director of Pupil Services by Aug. 14, 2024 to review and sign the plan; failure to do so may lead to expulsion without further board action.
The minutes, signed by Clerk Elana Levens-Craig and Secretary Dr. Kristin Baranski, record the action and set follow-up tasks for Pupil Services to verify compliance.
