Santee board approves suspended expulsion for student referred to Pride Academy

The Santee School District Board of Education voted unanimously Aug. 7 to expel student #8-2324, then immediately suspended the expulsion and placed the student on a Rehabilitation Plan. The special meeting, called to order at 2:00 p.m. by President Dustin Burns, reconvened to public session at 5:25 p.m.
Member Barbara Ryan moved to expel the student for violations of California Education Code section 48900 (a1) (attempted or threatened physical injury) and (k) (disruption/defiance), and board policy 5144.1. The motion passed 4-0; votes recorded were Dustin Burns — Aye, Barbara Ryan — Aye, Dianne El-Hajj — Aye and Elana Levens-Craig — Aye. The expulsion was immediately suspended while the student completes a Rehabilitation Plan.
Under the plan, the student is to transfer to Pride Academy and may not return to Pepper Drive School; the student must achieve and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA for scholarship, effort and citizenship, receive no new suspensions, attend regularly without unexcused absences or tardies, and complete 10 hours of community service by Nov. 8, 2024 with written verification. The student also must complete counseling programs for decision-making and peer pressure and grief counseling, and finish all elements of the plan by Nov. 8, 2024.
A parent is required to meet with the Director of Pupil Services by Aug. 14, 2024, to review and sign the Rehabilitation Plan. The minutes state that if the parent fails to meet within the designated time or does not sign the plan, the student may be expelled without further board action.
The board’s action was recorded in the minutes signed by Clerk Elana Levens-Craig and Secretary Dr. Kristin Baranski; Seat 5 on the board was noted as vacant.
