Superintendent Garcia reported the results of recent school-site visits and district engagement with city planning, urging the identification of locations for two future high schools to accommodate projected growth.
"So far, I've completed my 1st round of school visits, visiting every school and also superintendent student advisory meetings except for Delta," Garcia said, noting conversations with the city about long-term facilities planning and overcrowding at current campuses. He described student advisory meetings and the district's role in the Santa Maria general-plan study session to identify future school sites.
Garcia also highlighted student-support efforts now underway. He said 42 students from high schools completed Mental Health First Aid certification training and that the district is advancing a second phase of wellness work, including wellness centers and other mental-health initiatives.
The superintendent thanked principal and district staff for community engagement efforts—including a recent cultural festival attended by more than 200 community members—and noted the upcoming bench dedication for longtime board member Dr. Jack Garvin on October 23.
The board took no additional action on facilities planning at the meeting; Garcia said the district will continue coordinating with city planning efforts and bring updates as they develop.
