District details back-to-school plans and staff training, outlines immigration-response procedures

Superintendent Garcia told the board the district has held new-administrator orientation and staff trainings in advance of the Aug. 14 start of school, and outlined a schedule of symposiums, a keynote speaker and on-site professional learning.
"We held a new administrator orientation and an all admin advance last week... On Monday, August 11, we have a certificated symposium at Ethel Pope at Santa Maria High School," Garcia said, and named Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch as the symposium keynote.
Garcia also discussed the district's preparations for possible immigration‑enforcement interactions, saying administrators have been trained to follow board policy and state law and that the district will publish Know‑Your‑Rights materials for students, parents and staff when a redesigned district website goes live Aug. 8. "All admin have been trained in what to do if an agent comes to a school or district site in order to ensure that we are compliant with our board policies and state law," he said.
The presentation included an explicit expression of condolence for a student who died over the summer and several operational details for opening week (textbook distribution, orientations and custodial preparations). The superintendent thanked facilities and custodial staff for summer repairs and noted the district will emphasize multilingual supports—scheduling multilingual academy sessions for ELD teachers and frontline staff ahead of the term.
