On a second reading the council amended chapter 10.56 to change the direction of Dixon Street to westbound between Spring Street and Thane Street. Supporters emphasized safety concerns on the narrow street — including prior hit-and-run incidents and pedestrian strikes — while some residents worried traffic would be displaced to Hammond Street.
One resident argued the change was necessary for safety: “The reason that we started this ... was because of safety,” a resident said. Fire Chief Donnelly told council staff would run a live test with the department’s aerial truck to confirm turning radiuses and identify whether parking on Spring Street must be reduced to preserve emergency access. “We get to wherever the incident is within 4 minutes typically,” the chief said, adding that any small delays would be tested and mitigated by removing parking if needed. The motion to amend passed with one nay recorded.
