The Newport City Council approved a professional services contract with GZA GeoEnvironmental (Providence) for design and construction administration of the King Park seawall reconstruction, not to exceed $133,200. Staff said the award leverages a municipal resiliency grant from the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank and is currently budgeted.
Councilors described the seawall design as one strategy among several to reduce routine flooding driven by sea‑level rise and more severe rainstorms, and noted it complements recently installed tide gates. "This captures one of several strategies that the city is using to mitigate flooding that's happening as a result of both sea level rise and the impacts of climate change," a council speaker said while endorsing the award. The motion passed without recorded opposition.
The contract covers design and construction administration only; staff clarified the $133,200 is not construction funding and that additional capital awards will be subject to later approvals and grant terms.
