The City Council voted to approve a proposed settlement that would resolve longstanding litigation over the Ann Street Pier and allow the city to build a 210-foot extension, staff said. The resolution authorizes the mayor to sign the settlement agreement after further review by the city solicitor and any court or Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) edits.
Staff framed the settlement as a compromise that shortens a previously approved 330-foot extension and includes management and vessel-size provisions. “So what this does … is allows the city to have a 210 foot extension,” a staff member explained during the presentation. Councilors spoke in favor of ending protracted litigation and tapping grant funding to offset construction costs.
Council received public comments and took the motion from the floor. The council then voted to approve the resolution; the chair declared the motion carried. The resolution also authorizes the mayor to execute the settlement subject to final legal review. Council members said the settlement was preferable to years more of litigation and could allow construction to begin as early as next fall if funding aligns.
