Council presses to preserve historic Lift 1 elements as project moves forward

Preserving historic elements of the Lift 1 corridor factored into council members' questions at the May 5 work session. Councilmember John asked whether the project was relocating rather than simply restoring historic Lift 1 towers; staff clarified the plan is to remove historic towers, rehabilitate them off-site and then reinstall them in alignment with the original corridor.
"So it's multifaceted. It is they'll be taken off the site, rehabilitated... and then they get relocated," Jim Palin said, describing the rehabilitation and reinstallation sequence. Staff also described moving the skier chalet to Dean Street and converting it for museum and ticketing uses in partnership with the Aspen Historical Society.
Council members stressed they want rehabilitation to respect historic alignment and character and raised concerns that moving structures could alter their historic context. Palin and other staff said they are coordinating with the Aspen Historical Society and will work on rehabilitation details and sequencing as part of permit and construction agreements.
