Fair board drops token plan, approves Square and checkpoints for beer sales

At its April 13 meeting, the Teton County Fair Board voted unanimously to abandon a proposed token system for beer tents and the beer garden at the 2026 fair and adopt a cash-management plan reviewed by County Treasurer Katie Smits. Elaine moved to recommend the alternative plan; Britney seconded and the motion passed.
The approved measures require that all cash sales be recorded through Square, establish 1–2 cash collection checkpoints for beer tents during night events and 1–2 daily collection checkpoints at the beer garden during fair week, and require a cash log for all cash boxes with properly completed deposit slips. Trista, the Fair & Fairgrounds Manager, and Elaine met with Treasurer Katie Smits to design the approach and the Treasurer reviewed and approved the plan. The board recorded the decision as intended to improve accountability and oversight while avoiding token use for 2026.
Board minutes note the motion was returned for reconsideration after a prior 3–3 tie at the March 9 meeting. The approved approach will be implemented for the 2026 Teton County Fair pending operational setup by fair staff and volunteer partners.
