Commission conditions approvals at 333 West Bleecker after finding prior alterations

Commission staff reported that 333 West Bleecker (the Houck Building) had previously installed structural and framing elements for which historic members were altered without prior HPC approval. The commission approved requests to maintain the previously installed ridge beam, fenestration framing, steel diaphragm and framing elements but placed conditions on the approvals.
"Those were both approved as well, with the condition that no additional alteration of historic material may occur without approval explicitly permitting said alteration," a staff member said, and added that HPC staff will conduct regular inspections and has been working with the contractor and applicant to schedule them, with the first inspection scheduled for tomorrow.
Commissioners reiterated the importance of following the approval process and asked staff to continue inspections and coordination with the contractor. The conditional approvals allow the building to retain the installed work provided no further historic material is altered without explicit authorization and staff monitoring continues.
