Commission confirms limewash sample after on-site review of scaffolding-obscured test patches

The Aspen Historic Preservation Commission heard concerns from commissioners that scaffolding and tarps around a downtown building had obscured limewash test patches, making it difficult to assess the finish.
"We asked them to find a different location...and we went out there on Monday to look at a few different swatches and the lighting and different transparency levels," Planning director Dan Auerhois said, reporting that staff and Cara selected a swatch staff believes matches the renderings previously approved by the HPC. He added that the application method was revised after the initial sample appeared "streaky" and too opaque.
Commissioners said the first application looked like a single coat primer and urged the contractor to improve technique. "They just need to be more careful," one commissioner said during comments. Staff said it will include photos of the approved swatch in the next monitoring report to document what was approved.
The discussion arose during the commissioners' regular comments and project monitoring portion of the agenda; no formal motion was required for the sample selection but staff noted they will document the approved sample and monitor future application.
