Student services update: district reports 77 multilingual learners and ACCESS testing plans

Bonnie Osborne, Hinckley-Big Rock Director of Student Services, told the board the district has seen growing academic and social-emotional needs and has developed a learning framework to address those areas. She said enrollment has increased over the past four years, including outplaced students, prompting staff adjustments and a renewed focus on family communication and community resources.
Susan Clark reported the district currently has 77 multilingual learners speaking languages that include Spanish, Arabic, Gujarati, Mandarin, Ukrainian, Tagalog/Bisaya and Korean. Clark said students are identified through a registration survey and WIDA screening; 50 students are scheduled to take the ACCESS test in February, 21 students have already achieved proficiency, and 6 early-childhood students will be screened. A proficiency benchmark of 4.8 out of 6 was cited as the threshold for annual testing decisions.
