Residents urge historic‑preservation input on Armory Hall redevelopment; council vows HPC review

Roger Moyer, who has served on several local boards, said the Armory project had “ignored the HBC” (historic preservation commission) and warned against “remuddling” — an erosion of historic fabric through insensitive remodels. He listed local historic resources and asked the council to bring the HPC into the review process. The council’s former members and current members responded that the intent has been to ensure HPC input before final approvals and that the commission’s feedback would “weigh heavily” in any final product.
Councilors said they intended to ensure formal HPC review and noted the city has previously fast‑tracked aspects of the Armory project; members asked staff to coordinate a clear schedule for HPC consideration so the commission can advise on design choices and preservation mitigations.
Beyond the Armory, residents also raised concerns about a courthouse plaque quoting Robert E. Lee and asked the council to follow up with county officials, who control the memorial. The mayor and council agreed to review the historical context and follow up with county staff.
