The Olathe City Council approved a resolution allowing bow‑and‑arrow hunting on a single private property for the 2025–26 season under the city’s Urban Deer Management Program, with the measure passing 6–1.
Paul Kruger of Parks and Recreation said the program has existed more than two decades and is intended to address deer overpopulation, property damage, deer‑vehicle collisions and disease prevention. Staff said the ordinance parameters (UDO 9.140.110) include 27 requirements for hunters and that the property submitted for this season is about 95 acres, with roughly 65 acres inside city limits. Kruger emphasized the city does not allow the program on city parkland and that participants must comply with state tagging and bow‑and‑arrow regulations.
Council debate covered program participation (Kruger said participation has been light in recent years and harvests have been low), program goals and alternatives for population control. After questions and discussion, a motion to approve the resolution passed 6–1 on roll call.
