Hillsboro Community Unit School District #3 announced multiple grant awards at its Sept. 17 board meeting that officials said will fund safety upgrades and early-childhood facilities.
"The district applied for a Stronger Connections Grant and was approved for $193,000," Curriculum Director Hope McBrain told the board, adding the award "will be used towards new safety and security systems." McBrain also said the 708 Board approved mental-health programming that supports the district's Student Interventionist position. PreK Director Marci Gutierrez reported the district's playground project is progressing after a separate $315,000 grant.
Board members did not vote on these awards because they were presented as informational items; the grants were described as already approved by the awarding bodies. The district intends to use the Stronger Connections funds specifically for safety and security system upgrades and the $315,000 for the PreK playground project currently under construction.
Officials said the mental-health programming grant will fund the Student Interventionist role, but the minutes did not specify the grant term, exact funding breakdown, or start date for the position.
