The Horry County Planning Commission on Dec. 5 approved a rezoning of 1.47 acres on Highway 544 to allow Thompson Stone to expand an existing stone, marble and granite fabrication facility.
Staff described the request as a change from R-3 to R-4 to provide additional parking, fencing and landscaping for an expanded industrial building. Applicant representative Steve Strickland told the commission the company has been in the county for four decades and is seeking room for state-of-the-art equipment and fabrication capacity. "They've been here 40 years," Strickland said, adding the design will comply with overlay standards.
Staff recommended approval. Committee member moved the motion and the chair seconded; the motion carried on a voice vote. The commission noted that overlay compliance and permit review would occur before any building permits are issued.
