Parent tells board children faced racial slurs, threats and sexualized bullying; asks for accountability

A public commenter told the Abingdon-Avon CUSD 276 board that her children and others have experienced repeated racial slurs, sexualized exposure and threats at school, and said the incidents prompted involvement from DCFS and legal counsel. "I had my 8 year old son come to me one night almost in tears because at one point, him and his friend were told it was their day to die," the Public commenter said, urging immediate action.
The speaker described additional incidents including students pulling down another student's pants, profanities on Valentine cards and classmates pressuring a child to use racial slurs. The parent said she has tried emailing the superintendent and has not received a timely response, and demanded clear follow-up: "What exactly happens when these things are happening?" District staff offered to meet with the parent and requested she bring specifics so the administration can investigate, document and coordinate next steps. The speaker emphasized that families are considering homeschooling because they feel the district response has been inadequate.
