Commissioners direct staff to pursue mitigation after golf-course manager pumped reclaimed water into East Crystal chain of lakes

Commissioner Lockhart told the board Dec. 10 that video and staff conversations show the Mayfair Golf Course management company pumped water from an on-site reclaimed pond into the East Crystal chain of lakes following storm flooding. Lockhart said video showed two pumps discharging over several days and that the discharges coincided with algal blooms and other impairments. "They actually had 2 pumps... discharging over the course of a minimum of 3 days water from that pond into the East Crystal chain," Lockhart said.
Commissioners asked staff to pursue mitigation and coordinate with the City of Sanford; county staff reported that the Department of Environmental Protection and St. Johns River Water Management District had been contacted and had told county staff they considered it a violation. The board voted to direct the county manager to pursue whatever steps are necessary with the city manager and to review contracts with the management company for tighter language restricting off-property discharges.
