Officials flag possible county costs, landfill capacity concerns if biosolids disposal changes

Committee members asked staff to examine fiscal and operational impacts if biosolids spreading were restricted. Legislator Paul E. Van Caeseele urged the body to "explore the increase in cost that disposing of these biosolids a different way could create to the County in terms of infrastructure, transportation tipping fee and things like that."
Jack K. Wheeler, a county staff member, cautioned that "if it goes to the Landfill, there is only so much space and it is getting harder and harder to get DEC to issue those permits." He said the county and other local landfills could run out of space sooner if disposal shifts away from spreading, underscoring potential budgetary and infrastructure pressures that would merit further study.
