Town Manager Barbara Hollerand told the Board that the draft budget includes a $1 increase to the town's water flat rate and adds a $1 monthly equipment fee intended to alleviate the cost of repairing or replacing damaged AMI meters. Hollerand also said a rate study by the North Carolina Rural Water Association (NCRWA) is underway and that current rates are "much lower than needed to sustain the water fund."
Public Works Director Wesley Blount outlined the costs involved in repairing and replacing AMI meters and told commissioners the Board could either charge individual customers for damaged meters or add a small monthly equipment fee; the Board reached consensus to add the monthly $1 equipment fee.
