District coordinators present full-service community schools plan, seek partnerships

Heather Allen, who introduced herself as "your full service community school coordinator for the Abingdon Avon Middle School," and Stephanie McMillan presented a proposal to implement a full-service community schools model across district schools.
They described four pillars that will guide programming—collaborative leadership, expanded and enriched learning, integrated student supports and active family engagement—and said the program will use local partnerships (including food and clothing pantries and local nonprofit partners) and a needs-assessment process to target services. Allen said coordinators are in training and will form a leadership team with students, parents, community members and school staff.
Presenters told the board the ACT NOW grant provides a budget of "$500,000 per school per year" and emphasized expenditures must be allowable, allocable and reasonable under grant rules. They said the needs-assessment instrument will be developed in January and that the coordinators will conduct outreach, door-to-door engagement and community events to maximize participation.
Presenters invited community members to meet one-on-one, share partnership ideas, and help complete the asset and needs assessment once it is released.
