SFPS details social-emotional learning, prevention campaigns and school safety work

Jen Jefferson described how Santa Fe Public Schools builds safe, supportive school climates through early social-emotional learning (SEL) curricula, prevention campaigns and student leadership groups.
She said SEL instruction begins in kindergarten and that counselors teach bullying prevention across K–8. For younger children, the district's child-protection unit covers practical safety lessons such as crossing streets, helmet safety and appropriate touch. "We start young," Jefferson said, noting classroom teachers and counselors lead age-appropriate lessons.
Jefferson also listed district campaigns timed to the school year: suicide-prevention work in September for National Suicide Prevention Month, bullying-prevention activities in October, and a district SFPS gun-violence prevention week focused on discussions with students. She cited student groups such as WAVE and peer helper clubs as part of ongoing efforts to promote kindness and belonging.
These efforts are framed as preventive strategies to reduce stigma and help students recognize when to seek support from trusted adults.
