Council and officials praise multi‑agency response to Metropole structure fire; investigation to follow

Council members and staff spent time at the meeting recognizing the quick work of first responders and volunteers at a structure fire earlier in the day on Upper Metropole. City officials said the flames were largely out and smoke was clearing by 12:50 p.m., crediting the coordinated response by Avalon Fire, LA County Fire, the Sheriff's Office, Baywatch and mutual aid helicopters.
"We looked down that the the flames were out and the smoke was clearing by 12:50," the city manager said, praising calm radio traffic and coordinated communication. Fire and sheriff representatives described the scene as difficult because of narrow streets and constrained access; the fire chief said crews had to use chainsaws and multiple hose lines and acknowledged that crowd control by deputies and volunteers was required.
Council and staff thanked specific personnel for on‑scene roles and for follow‑up support: public works for traffic barriers, community services for shelter and the food bank, and individual staff who directed traffic and assisted evacuees. Officials said a full investigation will follow to determine cause and any lessons for response and public safety planning.
