Highway department reports chip-seal, crack-sealing work and upcoming bridge bids

Brookings County Highway reported crews completed chip-seal and crack-sealing work, will haul pea rock and patch roads, and plans to advertise bridge bids and begin culvert projects after planting season.
Brian, the highway department head, told commissioners crews finished crack sealing and a chip-seal project south of Sinai and will start work on County Road 1 (58th Avenue north of Highway 14) for about a mile.
"We wrapped up on our chip seal project roads, south of Sinai there yesterday...we're gonna be working on County Road 1 North Of 14...for about a mile," Brian said. He added crews are hauling pea rock, doing cold-mix patching on County Road 214 and plan to start culvert and bridge projects later in the season; he said contractors will notify staff about start dates.
Commissioners asked about rumble strip timing and additional signage for speed issues; Brian said he had discussed rumble strips with a contractor contact and that the county may install intermediate signs to remind drivers the speed limit is 45 mph. He and sheriff’s staff also discussed placing additional signs near community activity points to reduce speeds.
