County officials outline culvert replacement funding, townships’ application deadlines

Stacy, a county highway program staffer, told commissioners the county has roughly $660,000 remaining in the current culvert program and that additional state funding was authorized this year.
"So, you know, after all is said and done, we have, you know, about 660,000 left," Stacy said, and noted the legislature added "5,000,000 across all counties," with Brookings County to receive a portion later in the year. She said township matches remain 20% of project costs.
Stacy and Highway Department head Brian walked commissioners through the application timeline: townships must submit an updated five-year plan by the end of August to indicate interest; by the end of October each project requires a formal resolution acknowledging the township’s 20% responsibility, one application per structure, and contractor quotes. The commission will review and approve projects for the following year (commission approval for 2027 projects scheduled by 01/15/2027).
Why it matters: the clarified deadlines and the new state allocation change which projects are eligible for funding and when townships need to plan and secure contractor estimates.
