Harbormaster reports rising arrivals and assistance with cruise-ship fatality investigation

Kevin Schmidt, Avalon's harbormaster, briefed council on harbor operations and recent activity statistics, including preparations for the upcoming season and a summary of a recent cruise-ship incident.
Schmidt said the harbor recorded 813 arrivals in April for a total passenger count of 3,303 — about 10% higher than last April — and listed harbor maintenance and float work completed in advance of summer. He also described joint training scheduled with Baywatch and naval personnel and said the harbor launched multiple floats to prepare marina facilities.
Council asked about a reported accident on a cruise ship; Schmidt said the incident involved a fatality and was investigated by federal law enforcement agents. He explained harbor staff, led by Captain King, assisted in transferring the body to air transport and that the matter is under federal investigation: "it occurred ... in US waters basically," he said, and local crews supported transport logistics.
Schmidt closed by noting planned joint operations and that harbor revenues and visitor volumes are driving FY27 harbor revenue estimates discussed in the finance presentation earlier in the meeting.
