Council approves Measure B-funded EMS purchases, including Lucas compression device

Council authorized the city manager to procure EMS equipment purchased with Measure B funding from Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency, including a Lucas automated chest-compression system and Stryker powered patient-handling equipment.
Fire Chief Michael Allegria told the council these items will improve safety and operational capability: "The paramedics have 1, but when they're gone, we don't have access. So this thing's a game changer in the EMS world," he said, explaining that the department will also train staff to use the equipment. Chief Allegria noted the electric gurney will ease patient transfers on the older ambulance and an electric stair chair increases crew safety on multi-call days.
A council motion authorized procurement on a sole-source finding for Stryker and set a not-to-exceed amount consistent with staff recommendations; the motion passed on a unanimous voice vote.
