Bremer County staff outline DNR plan for PFAS well testing under $1M EPA grant

County environmental health staff briefed the supervisors on a DNR program backed by a $1,000,000 EPA grant to pilot PFAS testing for small and disadvantaged communities.
The presenter said the pilot will aim to fund testing of roughly 20 to 25 wells per county at an estimated $408 per test and that any detection requires a duplicate test at the same cost. On treatment, staff said the grant includes point-of-use treatment assistance and estimated roughly $3,000 per positive well for necessary equipment and support; the DNR has the funds but is awaiting EPA approval of its work plan before issuing county contracts. “So they're hoping each county can get funding for to test 20 to 25 wells for PFAS,” the agency official said.
Environmental health staff also said they tested about 186 private wells last year and that the county will not act as a pass-through for DNR-administered funds; the county will receive a $125 administrative reimbursement per test where applicable, and the DNR will manage testing logistics.
