Wyoming County approves school policing contracts despite objections over fairness

The Wyoming County Board on May 12 authorized contracts with school districts for sheriff-provided law-enforcement services, setting hourly rates and prompting objections from some supervisors.
Resolution 26-284 authorizes a contract with Letchworth Central School for law-enforcement services when school is in session, with rates set at $67.39 per hour (Sept. 1–Dec. 31, 2026), $68.66 per hour (Jan. 1–May 31, 2027) and $69.96 per hour (June 1–30, 2027). Resolution 26-285 authorizes a separate contract with Attica Central School at rates of $53.57, $54.64 and $55.73 for the same periods. Both contracts are contingent on availability of funds and County Attorney approval.
Supervisor Kehl said he would "be voting no on Resolutions numbers 27 and 28 even though his town is a major beneficiary. He feels this is not treating all county constituents equally." Supervisor Becker likewise said he opposed Resolution 28, arguing it placed an unfair cost burden on some constituents. The minutes record that Res. 26-284 carried with Ayes 181, Noes 20 (Attica); Res. 26-285 carried with Ayes 157, Noes 20 (Attica) as recorded in the meeting minutes.
The contracts formalize per-hour sheriff coverage for in-session school policing and will take effect Sept. 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027 under the terms recorded in the resolutions.
