Zoning panel keeps pitched-roof requirement for boathouses in shoreland ordinance

The Iron County Comprehensive Planning/Land & Zoning Committee heard public comments and reviewed Shoreland Ordinance 13.07(4)(a)(2)(c) addressing boathouse roof profiles and decided to keep the existing pitched-roof requirement. Director Erika Roeder read the ordinance language — that boathouses “shall be constructed with a pitched roof that equals or exceeds a 4/12 rise to run but is not steeper than 12/12 rise to run” — and gave members of the public three minutes each to speak for or against changing the rule. Multiple attendees and several lake associations submitted emails with both support and concerns.
After the public comment period and discussion, the committee agreed the pitched-roof requirement best protects property values and avoids potential future issues; the ordinance remains unchanged and no motion was required. Roeder said staff will continue to incorporate public input as the shoreland and floodplain ordinances are updated.
