Zoning committee previews draft moratorium on data centers, schedules public hearing

Iron County Zoning Department Administrator Erika Roeder presented a draft resolution, No. 2026-4088, proposing an interim moratorium on data centers and battery energy storage system development to allow the county time to establish an organized review process. Roeder said the moratorium is intended to give the county “a clear path forward” for handling any future requests while staff and the board develop permitting standards and review criteria. County Board Chairperson Youngs told the committee he is not opposed to such facilities but supports preparing the county to evaluate proposals.
Committee members asked staff to obtain guidance from corporation counsel before advancing formal proceedings; the committee directed Roeder to schedule a public hearing after counsel’s input. No vote adopting the moratorium took place; the resolution was presented as a draft for further public and legal review.
