Jeremy Newman, disaster program manager for the local chapter of the American Red Cross, urged the Public Safety Commission to help publicize an October Sound the Alarm event that will install free smoke alarms and offer brief home‑fire safety instruction. "We install smoke alarms free of charge into communities that are deemed at risk from home fires," Newman said, and described appointment signups via phone, a website link and QR code on printed flyers.
Newman said the national program aims to reach a community target by scheduling appointments — "maybe 30 to 40 to 50 appointments and visit all those homes in one single day" — and that volunteers also provide education on escape routes, earthquake safety and gas‑line response. Commissioners suggested outreach through churches, senior centers, neighborhood watch networks and newsletters; Newman offered to provide promotional materials and a draft flyer with a city logo for local distribution.
