The Brookings County Board granted an extended home-occupation permit (2026-CU004) allowing firearm and ammunition sales, gunsmithing and related repair within a designated room of an attached garage at 19935 474th Avenue in Argo Township. Richard Rodriguez, county zoning staff, explained the applicant has applied for a federal firearms license and that a copy would need to be filed with the county development office as a condition of the permit.
Staff also noted that the home-occupation permit (CU004) and a subsequent conditional-use permit for a private shooting range (CU005) were linked: the range approval would be contingent on approval of the home business and federal licensing. The zoning office read one letter from a neighbor, Amos Swift, expressing concerns about compatibility with surrounding agricultural operations and wildlife; the applicant said the business would not be open to the public generally and that customers would be limited. The board approved CU004 with conditions including a requirement that the applicant provide an FFL copy to the county development office. "Number 1, federal firearms license approval required with a copy of the license to be on file with the county development office," the staff report stated.
