Parent asks Washtucna board to amend bus route to pick up middle-school athlete

Greg Mullen, a parent of a middle-school volleyball player, asked the Washtucna School District board to amend a sports bus route so the Lynn-bound bus would turn off at Marcellus, cross Cunningham and "pick up Kinsley at the end of Bauer in Cunningham," he said. Mullen told the board the requested stop would not change the route mileage and argued it could be safer than staying on faster stretches of Highway 26.
Board members and staff discussed logistics, sign-out procedures after games and weather caveats. Staff said buses need to arrive on time for practice and that combining routes previously caused students to miss practice; trustees asked transportation staff to run the proposed Marcellus–Cunningham route without students to measure added minutes and fuel impact before any permanent change. The board also noted a written parental request would be required for a route amendment and suggested limiting winter deviations to main roads during inclement weather.
