The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board approved a recommendation Sept. 18 to forward names for multiple trail segments to City Council. The naming exercise was led by consultant Dave Ignatow of D.T.J. Design, who urged the board to prefer site‑context names tied to natural features, roads or neighborhoods for clarity.
After guided discussion of each segment, the board recorded these recommendations: Segment 1 (and 13) — "Monarch Trail"; Segment 2 — "Parkway Trail"; Segment 4 — "Buffalo Way"; Segment 5 — "Daniels Gate Trail"; Segment 5A — "Daniel Spur"; and Segment 7 — "Power Ridge." Chair moved the recommendation and a board member seconded; the motion passed on a recorded vote.
Consultant Ignatow told the board naming rules tend to stick if they rely on recognizable landmarks such as creeks, ridges or roadways. He argued that residents remember natural or road‑based names more readily than purely creative names, and he encouraged mapping the full set of names together so residents can judge continuity before final adoption.
Board members raised potential confusion with neighborhood gateway names and discussed avoiding names that might suggest wildlife presence (e.g., choosing 'Buffalo Way' rather than names implying actual buffalo). The recommendation will go to City Council for final adoption; the advisory board intends to continue naming additional segments at future meetings.
