Multiple Wabaunsee County senior centers ask for steady or increased 2027 allocations

Alma Open Door representatives Judy Sommer and Ruth Wille said their monthly meal program averages "15-20 meals per month" and requested an unchanged allocation of $1,500. Alta Vista submitted a narrative requesting $45,700 (23% increase) and Eskridge requested $32,050 (no change); both were not present in person.
Other centers reported facility and staffing needs: Harveyville representatives said the city and the senior group recently replaced heating and air; they will host a free community breakfast before a July 18 mural dedication and requested $9,050. Maple Hill reported a kitchen remodel funded by grants, wants to expand meal service back to five days and requested $31,000. McFarland completed an addition and requested $17,950; Paxico reported urgent building repairs and requested $15,000, citing an estimated $6,000 needed for repairs (up from $4,500 in 2026).
Commissioners thanked the centers for their services and acknowledged the role senior centers play in keeping older residents engaged and supported; no county allocations were finalized at the meeting.
