Area Agency on Aging requests $28,919 from Wabaunsee County, cites local senior needs

Julie Govert-Walter, executive director of the North Central Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging, presented senior demographics and a 2027 appropriation request at the June 29 meeting. "29.2% of the Wabaunsee County population is over the age of 60; 4.7% of that age group is living below the poverty line and 17.3% of the population over the age of 60 are living alone," Govert-Walter said, and she asked the commission to consider a total allocation of $28,919 to support administrative costs, in-home services and health-insurance support for Friendship Meals cooks.
Govert-Walter said the agency covered an 18-county region and provided $100,060 in direct investment to Wabaunsee County in 2025. The appropriation request breakdown is Administrative $2,392; In-Home Services $1,791; and an estimate for Friendship Meals health-insurance support of $24,736. She also said the agency is seeking two Wabaunsee County residents to join the agency's board.
Commissioners thanked the agency representatives and did not take a formal vote on the appropriation at this meeting; next steps would be budget consideration during the county's appropriation process.
