Wabaunsee County officials report failing bridge, seek contractor bids after heavy rains

Road & Bridge Supervisor Josh Hinch told the Wabaunsee County Commission on June 29 that recent heavy rains have caused multiple road failures and forced temporary closures. "Bridge 108 on Elm Creek Road is failing, it needs concrete work before it can reopen; Road & Bridge could do the work but it won't fit in the schedule until this fall," Hinch said, and commissioners asked staff to obtain contractor cost estimates for immediate repair.
Hinch said crews have backfilled a caving abutment at Bridge 460 at Hessdale Road and Maby Road and that CFS would be on site to prepare a proposal. Road & Bridge crews are deploying three excavators countywide, placing rip-rap on Kuenzli Creek Road and replacing culverts near Wells Creek Road, Elderberry Road and on North McFarland Road. Projects are being reprioritized as additional damage is discovered.
Commissioners pressed for a cost estimate from contractors for concrete work on Elm Creek Road so the county can evaluate whether to contract the job earlier than the department's in-house schedule. The county has not recorded a contractor selection or a firm bid at this meeting; Hinch indicated the in-house schedule would likely push the work to the fall if the county does not contract it.
