County says STR ordinance will follow approved grant; fee schedule and oversight still to be set

Montezuma County staff told commissioners they expect to receive grant funding to create a short‑term rental ordinance, and that the work will include an ordinance, code language and a fee schedule to allow the county to verify state lodging tax payments.
"It's been approved but has not been issued," a staff member said of the STR grant. Staff said the county will need to decide whether fees are limited to an application charge or whether the county will require comprehensive oversight of STR operations.
Commissioners noted that several municipalities (Dolores, Mancos, Cortez) already have STR fees and that the county’s approach will need to coordinate with local rules. Staff will return with draft ordinance language and proposed fees once the grant funding and scope are confirmed.
