Calumet County reports roughly $4.1 million mental health grant to fund school psychologists and coordinator

Calumet County has secured an approximately $4.1 million mental health grant that will fund multiple school-based positions and supports, Director of Special Education Joanne K. Metzen told the Children with Disabilities Education Board on May 27.
Metzen said the grant pays for 4.5 school psychologist positions (three of those roles have been filled) and a Mental Health Program Coordinator, who has been hired. The grant also covers professional development and other related activities and is set to expire at the end of 2029. Metzen reported that interviews to fill about 2.5 paraprofessional openings at Hilbert and New Holstein are scheduled for early to mid‑June, and that several teaching positions across Brillion, Chilton, Hilbert and New Holstein were recently filled.
Board members did not take formal action on the grant at this meeting; Metzen provided the staffing and program update for the board’s information. The director also said a planned summer paraprofessional conference for 2026 has been canceled and will be reconsidered for summer 2027 as staff implement grant‑funded activities.
