Commissioners consider $65,000 rock purchase to test new road surfacing approach

Commissioner Scott Mortimer told the commission there is "a fund that can be used for anything for Ottawa County" and asked to use some of it to "buy rock, approximately a one-time amount of $65,000.00" to purchase an inch-and-a-quarter-sized rock from Oklahoma that he said is harder than the county's current material. He proposed laying about three-quarters of the usual depth with the rock and topping with sand to bind it, arguing it would last longer and be cheaper over time.
Commissioner Grund asked how many miles the quantity would cover; Commissioner Duane Morris recommended running a test. The commission agreed to consult Chris Smith, Public Works Director, before proceeding.
