Police chief reports swearing-in, staffing shortfall and National Night Out plans

Police Chief Woody gave the committee a staffing and operations update on July 27, noting recent personnel actions, training and community outreach plans. He reported a July 2 swearing-in for Officer Neil Rossi, that the pension board found one officer eligible for a disability pension following a training incident, and that the Fire and Police Commission terminated one officer from the FTO process and appointed two probationary officers (Michael DeFrancisco and Estevan Castanon) with a swearing-in scheduled for Aug. 6.
"Since last month, on July 2, we had a swearing in for our new newest officer, Neil Rossi," Chief Woody said. He also told the council the department remains down three officers, has peer interviews scheduled for Aug. 4 for lateral and entry-level applicants, and that an officer currently is on long-term leave. Chief Woody announced National Night Out will be Aug. 4 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Big Thunder Park, with demonstrations, park programming and other community activities. He also said city, county, Cherry Valley and Belvidere Fire Department personnel will participate in active-shooter training during the week.
Councilors asked about fireworks citations from the July 4 period (Chief Woody said the department issued 13 citations) and thanked the chief for the update. The chief concluded by offering to follow up on specific counts or analytics as requested.
