City awarded two urban-forestry grants to add shade in parks, including a $50,000 nonmatching award

Richard told the board the city was recently awarded two urban-forestry grants to add shade in parks: one $50,000 non-matching grant and a second $50,000 grant that requires a 20% local match.
"The first one that we've it'll go to council for execution on, the next meeting, and it's a $50,000 non matching grant," Richard said. He added that the second award is also $50,000 but requires the city to provide a 20% match; staff said that match is manageable relative to anticipated benefits.
Members welcomed the grants as addressing repeated public concerns about shade — an issue raised earlier in the Riverview conversation and in park tours. Richard said the grants will be used to increase tree canopy in parks and that the items will be processed through council for execution.
