Kane County commissioners approved a $500,000 funding package on June 30 to proceed with remodeling work at the assessor's/DMV facility. Assessor staff described deferred maintenance that has left the building with failing roofing and HVAC systems, pervasive leaks in crawl-space plumbing, and cramped office layouts; staff recommended a restrained remodel focused on functional repairs and long-term reliability.
Commissioner Patty Cabey moved that the county proceed with the contract and fund the project with $200,000 from buildings and grounds (split across this year and next) and $300,000 from the MBA (Municipal Building Authority) over the same period, to include soft costs and contingency. Commissioners discussed adding a contingency of $50,000–$80,000 to address unknowns discovered during construction; staff said the recommended $500,000 target would allow value-engineering and contingency. The motion passed by voice vote and staff will direct design work to a cost target and return with contract documents.
