Trustee liaison recommends edits to CSBA policy package; ethnic-studies funding uncertainty flagged

As CSBA policy liaison, Trustee Andrea Hoheisel recommended the Board waive the second reading and approve the CSBA-provided policy and regulation updates, with specific edits. She asked that Policy 5020 (Parent Rights and Responsibilities) be expanded to note that students should become 'responsible, respectful, and trustworthy citizens of the community' and asked for removal of a sentence in Regulation 6020 (Parent Involvement) she said duplicates existing outreach channels.
Hoheisel and administration agreed to retain a paragraph in Regulation 6143 about mental-health curriculum language despite the District not offering a standalone mental-health class. Associate Superintendent Leo Perez noted that the 'mandated ethnic studies curriculum ... may not be funded by the state,' saying that lack of funding could affect whether the course becomes a requirement; he said he will update the Board as more information is released.
