Committee flags lanes as potential evacuation routes; five lanes could provide water access

Committee members highlighted the emergency-planning value of certain lanes, noting that access to the water can be critical for evacuation or emergency egress. Marika Bergson told the committee the subcommittee scored lanes for evacuation potential as part of the inventory.
"We identified 5 usable lanes that have potential for access to water," Bergson said, and she noted that four of those are on Belvedere with one on Corinthian. She identified Harry B. Allen Stairs as the single active lane currently used to reach the beach; the stairs are under city review for repairs at their base.
Members said the evacuation function elevates the priority of lanes with water access and asked staff to consider this use case when ranking projects for 2026. The committee asked staff to coordinate the lane inventory with the city’s structural assessment so engineering priorities can be aligned with public-use and emergency-management priorities.
